A couple of weeks ago I was privileged to lecture to the senior interior design class at Radford University in Radford,Virginia. Following a forty minute lecture, I was asked to critique the students’ work. This was an unexpected opportunity to do some mentoring. I spent four delightful hours with them. Two days later, I participated in judging a student competition where architecture students from two different universities in Puerto Rico and North Carolina presented their work. Again, the opportunity to serve as mentor manifested itself.
I am here to say that the future of the design professions is in good hands. These emerging professionals are talented, thoughtful, and have the whole world ahead of them. I saw a wide variety of work produced with a variety of media. These young people are eager to learn and demonstrate a high level of care in the choices and decisions they make in the course of their design projects. I found them to be polite, respectful, receptive to advice, and in general, they were fun to be around. I very much look forward to working with these folks in the future.
